So, I've tried and tried and tried to give Modern Family a chance. I think I've seen a total of 10 episodes and my laugh count is less than that. The situations are stale and the use of the documentary camera is lazy. I find CougarTown to be more amusing.
So will someone please elucidate this show's humor for me? What makes you laugh when you watch it? My parents like the show, but they like According to Jim, King of Queens, and the Raymond show.
The only character I find the least bit intriguing is Manny. The rest are cardboard thin, some bordering on insulting.
Also, how in the world is Nurse Jackie a comedy? Sure, it straddles the line, but I think it favors the serious over the zany.

Getting drunk with HGTV
If you need a reason to drink or a way to get drunk quickly, turn on HGTV.
Get two or three bottles of your favorite beer. Turn on International House Hunters. Everytime someone says "nice" take a drink.
You will be blitzed by the time the couple is deciding which house they want.
Grab a bottle of your favorite tequila. Turn on For Rent.
Everytime someone says "out," "sorry," or some other word with an apparent Canadian accent, take a shot.
You will be vomiting shortly.
As with all drinking games, please feel free to create your own rules.

Wish fulfillment
Glee has me reliving my high school years every week, and not in an entirely bad way.
I sang "I Deramed a Dream" as a duet for a talent show in high school and won second place. Last night, when Idina Menzel and Lea Michele sang it, I got chills.
Now if they can just get Chris Colfer to sing "What More Can I Say," I'll be completely satisfied (and have more music to sing along to on my way to work).

Great Scott!
It appears that Adam Scott, the likable lead in the painfully funny TV series Party Down has gotten a more permanent gig over at Parks and Recreation. While I love Parks & Rec, I really hope this doesn't mean the end is nigh for Party Down.Party Down returns to Starz for its 2nd Season on April 23rd. I'll be in New York, but will tune in while I unpack from what is sure to be a memorable trip.

About last night
The library is still full of fascist pigs.
I learned the correct pronunciation of Sabre.
I finally got to meet Meat Cat.
Jan Hooks and Jane Krakowski sang me a duet of "Do That to Me One More Time." [Ed. note: 30 Rock delivers so big, its too hard for me to pick one highlight.]
I sang about the baby penis in my mind.
A building from Manhatan crashed into a building from Manhattan.
That guy with colored contact lenses (read: no taste) who should have left a couple weeks ago finally got cut.
An angel without wings landed on the hood of Thunderbird in 1978.
And I still don't know what Michael Westin did--or those wacky vampire brothers!
[Parks & Rec, 30 Rock, The Office, The Sarah Silverman Program, Fringe, Project Runway, Supernatural, Burn Notice, The Vampire Diaries]

Joy and Sympathy
In case you didn't know, I watch "The View." No, really, I do. What can I say? There's not a lot on before I go to bed. In fact, the Tivo is paused on it right now as I type this. . . and this is something that needs to be typed.
I feel so sorry for Joy Behar. The one-time comic-relief has been forced into the position of "Sane One." I have so much sympathy for her as she tries to inject sanity into discussions which are skewed by some combination of Sherri Lewis' idiocy, Elisabeth Hasselhoff's talking-points-conservatism, and Whoopi's drug-addled, rarely-on-topic ramblings.
Is it strange that Fred Armisen's imitation of her engenders in me a sense of filial respect?

Deadly enough to threaten world peace
So, my parents should have had some idea that I was a homo when I was more excited about Joanna Cassidy and Sheryl Lee Ralph in Codename: Foxfire, than I was about Mr. T in the A-Team.
Regardless, this series lasted 3 episodes and changed my life forever.

Dance all summer
SYTYCD is back. Nigel Lythgoe is still a big, fat homophobe.
I'm in LOVE with Nobuya from Japan. They even subtitled him incorrectly. He said, "voguing" and "wacking" and they subtitled the latter as "locking." That's what you get for putting non-dancers in the editing booth on a dance show.
Oh, wait, even Tabatha and Napoleon called it locking. Fuggin' idiots. Don't they read my blog?
Well, maybe he said "locking" . . . I thought I heard an "r".

All in the Lea
I don't know if you caught the series premiere of Glee (the pilot is still up), but it was pretty much awesome. You know how a lot of times you watch a pilot and you think, "Well, that was kinda half-baked but there is lots of room to grow?" Well, Glee's premiere had tons of nods and winks to movies I admire (Election, Bring it On) and even though the characters are bit cardboard-y at this point, they kinda need to be to draw in the viewers.
Anyway, the show stars Lea Michele whose vocal stylings I've been aware of since Spring Awakening; yet, I was still floored by her. Apparently she got her start at the age of 8 in Les Miserables. In Glee she sings 'On My Own' from the Les Mis and nails it. I haven't heard phrasing so precise and emotive since . . . Lea Salonga.
Compare for yourself:
And, even though its not either of them, it is a wonderful performer and decent vocalist who will be joining the cast of Glee for an episode. (via Tapeworthy)

A long time ago, we used to be friends
There's been talk about it for quite some time, but apparently its already 70% written and all the usual suspects are on board. So, fingers crossed, and a Veronica Mars movie will be here someday soon. (all kinds of linkage: 1, 2, 3)
If you haven't done so already, watch the whole series--which you can do for free on Joost. (After 2 years, I think Phil's finally into it.)

One of my darkest secrets . . .
. . . is that when I come home from work, after I watch the previous evening's Daily Show and Colbert Report, I watch The View.
If you ask me about it in person, I will deny it.
But I had to say something, because today, Sherri Lewis (ok, I know that's not her real last name, but I can never remember her real last name) got into it with that dumb bitch Elisabeth Hasselhoff (ok, I also realize that is not her last name, but I like to imagine that her husband is the Hoff and not some football player).
So as I was watching them hiss and show their claws, I thought, "I would really just like to give that highstrung, uptight bitch a hit of ecstasy, hold her in my arms, stroke her hair, and extol the virtues of analingus to her."
Also, I would like to encourage the studio audience to begin booing Elisabeth.

Better be good for frak's sake

I'm sure all the queer geek blogs 'round the 'sphere are buzzing about how excited they are for the new season of BSG.
There was a time when I would have been equally as ecstatic, but as they slowly sucked the life out of the show last season and flattened metaphors with their ham-fisted storytelling, my interest waned.
Actually, it more than waned. I lamented the fact that I had told so many people that it was a good show because all of that goodness was thrown out the air lock as the show turned to flashback episodes, inconsequential stories about peripheral characters, inconsequential stories about characters that only got one episode, and the biggest let down of all? The two-hour long TRIAL as season finale. It was snooze city and how the writers abandoned character! Both Katee Sackhoff and Jamie Bamber's limited acting chops were laid bare for all the world to see.
So, yeah, I'll tune in tonight. The season opener can't be nearly as good as last season's (the only really good thing about last season), but the first two years were so good and so nuanced and so prescient that I'll forgive the 3rd season, but they better make it good!
In other news, I will officially be back on Tuesday with the LONG OVERDUE review of Skull & Bones. And I'm going to try to do one feature per week for the rest of the year, normally out on Tuesdays with smaller updates when I have the chance/impetus.

I love you more each day,
Tim Gunn! (And you, too, baby!)
But HOLY FREAKING CRAP! I've always been enamoured of Mr. Gunn, but this video clip has to be like the cutest thing I've seen in a while!
I love at the end when Heidi is relentlessly tickling Tim and he's giggling like a school girl!!!!!
(And the walk off is good, too.)

The Wednesday wiggle
So I guess I'm going to become one of those blogs on Wednesdays.
I know that So You Think You Can Dance is a huge hit and it gets tons of ink spilled about it, but I can't help myself. I love dancing so much that I feel it is my obligation to post about the show.
Last week I completely overlooked Anya and Danny's jive from the previous week. Let me just say that ballroom, in general, doesn't really do it for me. The jive, thankfully, is a high energy, complicated footwork dance. Danny was perhaps preoccupied with getting the steps, but Anya really let loose. Their performance was stellar. Couple that with last week's oh-so-yawn-inducing, but technically flawless Vienese Waltz, and I think they're the couple to beat.
But let's get back to my favorite--little miss Sabra. She got to dance in her style last week and if her partner Dominic had just a tiny bit more oomph, it would have been the breakaway performance.
Another standout performance was Pasha and Jessi. Unfortunately, they ended up in the bottom three. Neither one was let go, but it looks like the end is nigh is for Ms. Jessi . . .
And, speaking of dancing, I've signed myself and my beau up for hustle lessons at the Washington Dance Club in July.
